After much hype, relative unknown Rooney Mara has been cast as computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in Sony Pictures' adaptation of Stieg Larsson's international best-selling Millenium trilogy, beginning with David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Mara's previous roles include this year's Youth in Revolt and A Nightmare on Elm Street as well as Fincher's latest film, The Social Network, about the founder of Facebook and due for an October release. The actress will appear opposite Daniel Craig, whose role as journalist Mikael Blomkvist was confirmed by Sony in a press release yesterday.
Much speculation had surrounded the role after Noomi Rapace, who played Lisbeth Salander in the 2009's Swedish adaptation of the same material, ruled herself out.
